Empowering communities through culturally grounded, people-centered justice systems
Alternative Justice System Mashinani Initiative Kenya (AJS-MIK) is a grassroots movement dedicated to transforming justice delivery in Kenya. "Mashinani" means "grassroots" in Kiswahili, reflecting our commitment to bottom-up, community-driven approaches to justice.
We are a registered Public Benefits Organization under the Public Benefit Organizations Act of 2013, with registration number NGO-ZZFY-PP. Established in 2022 and headquartered in Nakuru City, we work across Kenya to bridge the gap between formal legal systems and traditional community justice mechanisms.
Our approach recognizes that many Kenyans, particularly in rural areas, prefer and trust traditional dispute resolution methods that are culturally appropriate, accessible, and affordable. We work to strengthen these systems while ensuring they align with constitutional principles of justice, fairness, and human rights.
Chief Justice Martha Koome highlights the value of Alternative Justice Systems, noting that traditional methods continue to play a vital role in resolving disputes and fostering social harmony.
A just, peaceful, and inclusive society where communities access timely, culturally grounded, and people-centered justice.
We envision a Kenya where every individual, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status, can access justice that respects their cultural context while upholding fundamental rights and freedoms.
To strengthen and institutionalize community-based dispute resolution mechanisms by integrating traditional values and customary practices into national policy and legal frameworks, ensuring equitable access to justice for all.
We work to create synergies between formal and informal justice systems, building bridges that make justice more accessible, affordable, and effective for all Kenyans.
We uphold principles of equity, impartiality, and procedural fairness in all dispute resolution processes.
We honor and integrate traditional knowledge, customs, and practices that promote harmony and reconciliation.
We ensure all community members, especially women, youth, and marginalized groups, have a voice in justice processes.
We maintain open processes, clear records, and accountability to communities we serve.
